towpath from Riverhead to Whinhill Lock

  • At town lock the towpath veers briefly away from the canal, dodging around Lock View and Sedgefield cottages via a leafy corridor.
  • Access to Town Lock is a public right of way [?] across Lockview's lawn.
  • For most of this length it is a wide grass path between the hawthorne-dotted bank of the canal and a wire fence.
  • The towpath side is an island of meadow and carr, waterbound by the beck on the west and the canal to the east.
  • The east side is a series of farms, most notabley Chesney Farm which runs stables and has paddocks down to the water's edge.
  • Another public footpath (shown on the OS 1:25000 map) used to connect with the towpath just below the powerlines ... The footpath follows the west bank of the beck all the way to wansford bridge and beyond. Unfortunately the footbridge at this end no longer exists, limiting access to all but the most adventurous.

'private' sign across path at riverhead

Don't be put off by the sign on the closed iron gates saying 'private' or whatever. The right of way from riverhead goes through those gates.

Private sign on gate at lock view

I have read your article informing site users to ignore the private sign on our gates at lock view. The sign reads Private DRIVEWAY ,meaning private to cars from our house and our neighbours Sedgefield.WE have no problem with members of the public using the public footpath on foot.A further article describes a path across our lawn to the lock gates as being a public right of way. This is not the case.We are informed by Mr Stuart Mumby of East Yorkshire Council that there is currently no right of way across our lawn and any one passing over it will be committing trespass. We are of the opinion that you are provoking a situation which is totally unecessary. We will continue to welcome walkers who use the footpath alongside our property.

Path from Riverhead to Whinhill lock

The pathway mentioned here is not strictly speaking the Towpath; which ran along the north/east bank all the way from Riverhead to Brigham. However, there is now no actual path along that bank and no public right of way! (A towpath is not automatically a Public Right of Way).

The path along the south/west bank is a Public Right Of Way from Riverhead to Whinhill Lock. It has a long history as a public pathway. The Public Right of Way was disputed in recent years, but was legally recognised in 2004 and added to the County Council's Definitive Map.
