how to ... post comments (including netiquette & subject threads)
Before you post anything to a pulic website, please take a moment to read the guidance notes (below) on 'Netiquette' and 'Threads and Subjects'.
How to ... post a new comment or reply
Please follow these steps (this is what's supposed to happen):
You must be logged in before you can post comments.
At the foot of the relevant page there's a form entitled 'post new comment' with fields* 'subject' and 'comment'. If you are logged in, your username will appear after 'postnew comment ... your name:'
You type in some message (if you don't enter a 'subject' the website automatically takes the first few words of your message and uses that as the subject) and click 'preview comment'. Don't worry you can cancel or edit your comment at the next stage.
You get a new page - the preview page - showing what your comment will look like, Beaneath that, the edit box (identical to the one on the previous page, containing your comment) so you can make any changes, and below that 2 buttons:'preview comment' and 'post comment'. (And below that a copy of the item you are commenting on forreference).
If you make any final changes to your comment here, it's a good idea to click the 'preview comment' button again when you think you are done.
Click 'post comment' when you are completely satisfied, and voila, you're done. You see your comment published on the webpage.
*You'll notice throughout the site that some form fields have a red asterisk by them. These are mandatory fields, meaning that you have to put something in that field, or the site won't let you 'submit' the form.
Netiquette
Netiquette is a form of etiquette learned from and designed for communication via the internet, whether on public pages, blogs and discussion groups.
Please make your comments relevant. If you want to comment on an issue raised by something you find here, please use the "add comment" button at the foot of each item to reply to that page. If you want to raise an issue, share an idea, etc please begin by reading the "Where to post"
Please make your comments respectful. It's best just to avoid making personal comments or references of any kind because they can so easily be misinterpreted. Do make use of the "emoticons", especially when your comments might be humorous. I know that sounds like spoiling the punchline but it really will save misunderstandings that annoy everyone. If you come across something that makes your blood boil or offends you, take care! Try to criticise issues rather than people. Rant all you want into the keyboard, but please consider all the other people who use this site before you hit the "submit" button. If you say something you regret a brief apology or correction will make the world of difference.
Please make your comments constructive. Try to find positive ways to move discussions forward. Except in the website help section - which is deliberately informal - please avoid one-liners like 'I agree' or 'cool!'. They take up a lot of space on the screen and are not of much use to the next reader. Please don't be offended if you find that a moderator has 'tidied away' your post to help clarify the thread of the discussion.
Threads and Subjects
Comments are sorted, filed and displayed automatically, and therefore follow strict rules. If you don't go by the following guidelines, your comments will not appear in the right place and the page becomes very hard to make sense of!
If you want to reply to a comment, please make sure you click on the 'reply' link within the container box of the exact comment you are replying to. That way your reply will be linked to the original comment and appear indented and below it. For an example, look at the coments at the foot of this page.
If your comment is not a reply to any other comment, then use the 'add new comment' link at the foot of the article.
Your comment should have a 'subject' that acts like a very brief summary of your point. If longer than 64 letters (including spaces and punctuation), it gets cut short when you submit it.
Incidentally, in order to preserve the example comments below, this is one of the few pages on this site where you cannot post comments!
